I used to be the guy who "tracked" workouts in his head. Which is to say: I didn't track them at all. I'd finish a session, tell myself I'd log it later, and later never came.
Then progressive overload stalled. Was I stuck at 80kg bench because of programming — or because I'd been doing the same weight for six weeks without noticing?
So I tried something stupidly simple: I dictate my workout into Wispr Flow on the walk home from the gym.
Still sweaty, still breathing hard, I open the app and just talk:
"Push day. Bench: 80 kilos, four sets — eight, eight, seven, six. Felt heavy on the last set, left shoulder a bit tight. Incline dumbbell 26s, three sets of ten. Lateral raises 12s, three twelves. Tricep pushdowns, dropped to 32 kilos because the stack was busy. Energy seven out of ten, slept badly last night."
That's it. Ninety seconds. No fumbling with a notes app mid-set, no trying to remember RPE three hours later. Wispr Flow turns the ramble into a clean, structured log — sets, reps, weights, and my own subjective notes, all formatted and ready to paste wherever I keep my program.
Three reasons this stuck when every app failed:
1. Speed. Typing "incline dumbbell press 26kg x3x10" between sets breaks your rest rhythm. Talking for 90 seconds after the session doesn't interrupt anything.
2. Honesty. When you write, you edit yourself — you skip the "felt heavy" and "slept badly" because it feels like clutter. When you talk, it all comes out. And that subjective stuff is exactly what explains plateaus two months later.
3. Consistency. The best tracking system is the one you'll actually use. A frictionless voice dump after every session beats a beautiful Notion template you abandon in week two. I've now got four straight weeks of complete logs — a personal record.
Here's the part I didn't expect: reading back a week of dictated logs before planning the next week is genuinely useful. I can see the shoulder tightness showing up three sessions in a row (time to deload pressing and add face pulls). I can see which days correlate with bad sleep. My programming decisions are suddenly based on data instead of vibes.
Cost of this system: zero extra apps, zero extra time. Just the walk home I'm already doing.
If you train and don't track — or track inconsistently — try dictating your next session. Grab Wispr Flow here: https://ref.wisprflow.ai/hector-wheatley. Your future PRs will thank you.
