I Dictated Every Thank-You Note This Week. Nobody Could Tell.

13 September 2026 • Productivity

Sunday confession: I'm terrible at thank-you notes.

Not because I'm ungrateful. Because every time I sit down to write one, it turns into a 20-minute staring contest with a blank screen. "Dear... thanks so much for... the thing... it was great." Delete. Rewrite. Sound like a robot. Give up.

This week I tried something different. I just talked them out instead.

The experiment

Six messages needed sending: a thank-you to a friend who helped me move house stuff, a birthday message for my mum, a congrats note to an old colleague on their promotion, a thank-you email to a podcast guest, and two LinkedIn recommendations I'd been putting off for months.

Normally? That's a Sunday afternoon gone. With Wispr Flow, I knocked out all six in about 15 minutes — most of them while making coffee.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about dictated messages: they sound warmer. When I type "congratulations on your promotion," it reads like a Hallmark card. When I say it out loud, it comes out like "mate, I saw the news — genuinely so pleased for you, you've worked so hard for this." That's the message people actually want to receive.

What surprised me

  • Speed: 15 minutes for 6 thoughtful messages. Typing would've taken over an hour (plus procrastination).
  • Tone: Every single person replied saying how much the message meant. One friend said it "made her day." Typed versions never got that reaction.
  • The LinkedIn recs: I'd been avoiding them for months because they felt like homework. Dictated both in under 5 minutes. Done.

Why it works

Thoughtful messages are emotional. Typing filters emotion out — you self-edit, you formalise, you kill the warmth. Speaking keeps it in. Your voice naturally carries the feeling, and Wispr Flow captures the words exactly as you'd say them. No robotic transcription errors, no "correcting" your personality out of it.

The people in your life can feel the difference between a message you laboured over and one that just... sounds like you.

Try it yourself

Next time you owe someone a message — a thank-you, a birthday wish, a well-done — don't type it. Say it. Hit one button, talk for 30 seconds, hit send.

Try Wispr Flow free for a month — your friends and family will notice the difference before you do.

I write about working faster without losing the human touch. I use Wispr Flow daily and share one real use case every day. This is day 30+ and I'm still finding new ones.
