I Dictate My Grocery List Now — and I Never Forget the Milk

2 October 2026 • Productivity

I used to write my grocery list on the back of whatever was closest. Receipts. Envelopes. Once, memorably, a wedding invitation RSVP card. Half the time I left the list on the kitchen counter anyway.

Then I'd do the thing everyone does: wander the aisles trying to remember what we needed, buy three things we already had, and forget the one thing I actually went in for. Milk. It was always milk.

Last week I changed the system. I opened the fridge, opened Wispr Flow, and just talked.

The 60-second fridge scan

Here's roughly what I said: "Milk, eggs — we're out. Cheddar. Spinach, the big bag. Chicken thighs for Thursday. Rice. Coffee… definitely coffee. Frozen peas. And those oat biscuits mum likes, she's visiting Sunday."

No unlocking a notes app. No typing with one hand while holding the fridge door with the other. Just talking while looking at empty shelves.

Wispr Flow turned it into a clean list — every item separated, "definitely coffee" transcribed with the urgency intact. I glanced at it, deleted nothing, added nothing. Done in about a minute.

Why voice wins in the kitchen

Your hands are busy in a kitchen. You're holding things, moving things, checking dates on yoghurt pots. Typing a list means stopping, drying your hands, unlocking your phone, tapping it all out. So you don't. You tell yourself you'll remember, and then you're standing in Tesco staring at the cheese section like it owes you money.

Dictation removes the friction. See it, say it, it's on the list. I caught things I'd have missed — the oat biscuits only surfaced because I was standing there looking at the biscuit tin while talking. A typed list made later from memory would never have included them.

It works mid-week too. Notice we're low on something? Two seconds of dictation appends it. No more "I meant to add that" moments.

The result

One minute to build the list. Zero forgotten essentials two shops running. And the Sunday visit went smoothly — biscuits present, mum impressed, which honestly might be the highest ROI I've ever had from an app.

If your grocery runs involve guesswork and déjà vu in the dairy aisle, try talking instead of typing. Open the fridge, say what you see, and shop from a list that actually matches your kitchen.
